Real Case Sharing

One summer, a construction team was carrying out outdoor pipeline installation work in the mountains under the scorching sun. Before installing the PE pipes, they conducted a pressure test on them as usual. The nominal pressure of this batch of PE pipes was 1MPa. After filling the pipes with water, the construction team started pressurizing and maintained the pressure at 0.8MPa.

At the beginning, everything was normal. Echter, at around 11 o’clock in the morning, the construction team suddenly found that the surface of the pipe had bulged, and then the PE pipe burst. The nominal pressure of the pipe was 1MPa, but it burst at only 0.8MPa, which was obviously abnormal.

The Real Reasons Why PE Pipes Burst During Pressure Testing

Elevation Difference

We all know that mountainous areas have very uneven terrain, with large differences in elevation. Daarom, when conducting pressure tests in such terrain, special attention must be paid to the height difference.

Conducting pressure tests under direct sunlight at noon in summer is not a wise choice. This is because the design pressure of PE pipes usually refers to the pressure at an ambient temperature of 20°C.

According to calculations, when the temperature reaches 30°C, the pressure-bearing capacity of PE pipes is only about 87%. If the temperature rises to 40°C, the pressure-bearing capacity of PE pipes will only be about 74%.

Especially after the pipe is filled with water, the black pipe easily absorbs heat under direct sunlight. The water temperature inside the pipe can even reach 50-70°C.
